I've received some notices from our home office abou= t backup tax withholding beginning March 6th for the three Trust= accounts.  That date derives from 30 days after Edward Jones receivin= g official notice of the grantor/settlor of the trusts passing away.

 

After that date, any interest, dividends, and/or cap= ital gains would be subject to backup tax withholding at the current federa= l rate of 24%.  As I understand it, that withholding is a tax credit t= hat a client may claim when filing tax return and could potentially increase the amount of the tax refund or decr= ease the amount of taxes due.  Edward Jones is required by law to begi= n federal backup withholding after March 6th.

 

As I mentioned in my previous email, my understandin= g is you plan to transfer assets into a new trust account (s) with a new EI= N for the trust and we can then proceed with separate 1099 forms for tax re= porting.  I'll work quickly to get those new trust accounts opened once I have that information if that is th= e direction you'd like to proceed.
